Americans Exercise More, But Are Still Not Losing Much Weight

Washington: Americans Get More Exercise, But Did Not Do Much To Slim Their Waist, Highlighting The Immense Challenges Faced By Health Advocates Fighting Obesity Crisis In The Nation.

In More Than Two Thirds Of The Counties In The Nation - Including Some Of The Most Unhealthy - Men And Women Have Become More Physically Active Over The Past Decade, According To Data Released Wednesday.

Women Make Significant Progress In The Country, With The Percentage Who Got Enough Exercise Weekly Jump From 46.7% To 51.3%. The Percentage Of Physically Active Men Scored A Point To 57.8%.

However, These Improvements Did Little To Reduce Obesity, Researchers From The University Of Washington Institute For Metric And Health Evaluation Concluded.

Between 2001 And 2009, Obesity Rates Among Men And Women Fell In Just Nine Counties. National Rates Have Increased Over The Decade, Despite Some Recent Evidence Suggests That Obesity Rates Can Not Be Increased.
"There Have Been Great Strides In Physical Activity," Said Dr. Christopher Murray, Author Of The Research, Which Was Published In The Population Metrology Health Journal. "To Fight Against Obesity, We Must Do . But You Also Need To Do More .... Only With Physical Activity Is Not The Solution. "

Today, More Than A Third Of American Adults And About 17% Of Children Are Obese, According To The Centers For Disease Control And Prevention.

Many Health Experts Believe That The Change In Diet Can Do More To Make These Figures Increase Exercise.

In Another Study Of The Institute Published Wednesday In The Journal Of The American Medical Association. Malnutrition Identified As The Number One Factor Contributing To The Poor Health Of The United States Compared To Other Industrialized Countries.

Life Expectancy In America Stagnated For Women In 1405, Counties And Municipalities 154 Men Between 1985 And 2010, The Researchers Reported. And Americans Who Live In The Worst Performing Counties In The Nation, In Appalachia, Who Now Live Shorter Than Those Living In Vietnam, Yemen And Sudan.

Despite The Bad News, Murray And Others Believe That, Over Time, The Increase In Exercise Will Likely Offer Significant Health Benefits And Can Help Reverse Decades Of Weight Gain.

"We Know That Exercise Has Great Virtues," Said Dr. Georges C. Benjamin, Executive Director Of The American Public Health Association. "This Helps Prevent Cardiovascular Disease, Tone Muscles And Reduce Bone Loss. Improves Mental Health And Reduces Stress .... All Of This Is Vital."

Some Of The Greatest Benefits Of Physical Activity In The Last Decade Occurred In Counties Less Healthy In The United States In The Deep South And Appalachia.

The Percentage Of Women In Morgan County, Kentucky, Exercise Every Week 18.3 Percentage Points Between 2001 And 2009 To 44%, The Researchers Found A Major Improvement.

The Biggest Gain For Men Was Held In Concho County, A Small Rural County In West-Central Texas, Where The Percentage Of Men Who Have Enough Physical Activity Increased By 16.7 Percentage Points To 58.2%.

In Total, Six Of The 10 Counties That Have Improved Most Men And Seven Of The 10 Most Improved Women In Kentucky. Counties Around Atlanta, Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego, Houston And Denver Have Also Experienced Significant Improvements, According To The Report.

The Researchers Defined Adequate Physical Activity As 150 Minutes Per Week Of Moderate Physical Activity Or 75 Minutes Of Vigorous Activity.

The Researchers Said This May Explain The Success. But Robert Jeffery, An Epidemiologist And Researcher Of Weight Loss At The University Of Minnesota, Said That Public Health Campaigns Can Be The Result. "Advertising Has Increased Everywhere, But Especially In The Southeast," He Said.

Despite Improvements, There Are Large Disparities At The National Level, The Two Modes Of Exercise And Obesity.
